Finance and politics shouldn’t mix. But sometimes it is unavoidable

financialnews1While there are many who would argue that the worst recession that the UK has suffered for at least the last fifty years was not necessarily the fault of the government, the recent scandals regarding inflating of personal expenses provides a definite indication that too many MP’s may have been suffering from a bad case of misplaced priorities and for too long a time.

Those who have seen fit to defend Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alasdair Darling for their handling of the UK’s finances must have had their heart in their hands as the Telegraph exposed “hands in the cookie jar” scandal gradually unwound. The only consolation that they could have taken was that no matter how “naughty” the Labour members of parliament has been, their Conservative colleagues appeared to have been a lot worse, if not a lot more innovative.

Now the scandal, and the total lack of confidence and faith in the political system, that it has generated looks like sending Gordon Brown into a form of early retirement. His colleagues in the Labour party look ready to finally give up on Gordon, using the piece of logic usually whipped out during similar circumstances “Its every man for himself”.
What Brown lacked in charisma he apparently made up in honesty, and while no one can accuse him of taking part in inflating expenses regarding the MP’s “home away from home” scandal, his passivity on the subject was enough to tar him with the same brush. The Labour Party are well aware that should an election be called anytime soon, they will be totally defeated, and the only slim chance that they might have is a change of leadership.

So Gordon and possibly even Alistair look like becoming sacrificial lambs, paying the price for one of the tattiest political scandals ever to disgrace the Houses of Commons. Only time will tell, if they deserved it or not.
